I just opened up a package from SparkFun, and one of the items in it was the TSL235R Light to Frequency converter.

The TSL235R converts light intensity into a square wave frequency output. One of the comments on the SparkFun product page suggested using it as an optical theremin, however no one followed up on that comment with their results. So I thought I'd throw together a quick video preview of the TSL235R.
