Anyone who uses refillable propane tanks, especially for grilling, may be using one that was used in a methamphetamine lab.

The National Propane Gas Association said drug makers sometimes use the tanks to steal anhydrous ammonia, which they use in the manufacturing process. Tanks may have been used to make meth.

Officials said that ammonia can ruin the valve on the tank, which can be dangerous if the tank ends up back in the supply chain.

To protect yourself, look at the brass valves. If they are turning blue-green, that's a sign of corrosion, and you should take it back.

Scott Brockelmeyer with Ferrellgas said all tanks are inspected for damage and then cleaned. Tanks that are suspected in illegal activity are put in a scrap pile.

Brockelmeyer said the chances are slim of getting a tank that was used to make meth.
