I think this is a great rendition. And the play is not supporting statutory rape or paedophilia, it is about taking charge of your vagina and your womanhood even with all the horrible experiences.

Thanks for that. I think the powerful part of this scene is that the girl takes a negative event and is able to transform it into something that gives her strength. The fact the woman seduces her--and she is a minor--is definitely wrong. But the crux is that the girl uses her experience and her own strength to springboard her way to healing. It doesn't mean molesting a girl heals her. It means that particular girl was able to empower herself.

@tyciol As I understand it, the original age of 13 was changed to 16 in order to avoid allegations of statutory rape. It's still very iffy and borderline. I can overlook those implications and assume that the older woman wasn't being predatory. But public opinion wouldn't be so forgiving if the older person were male. But since there are no male characters, save for Bob, I consider the Vagina Monologues to be strictly of, by & for women and be on my way.

The fact people laugh at her impaling herself is disgusting. It's painful as all fuck, not funny. My mom thought I had gotten my period when I was six

@tyciol ROTFL

You can twist words and re-frame all you want but this is endorsing predatory lesbian behaviour, in fact in its original form it endorses the lesbian rape of a vastly under age girl.
-
@tyciol there is never in any way a GOOD molestation. Listen to your own words! How could you e en think those words belong next to eachother?

How come this monologue says she's 16 when she gets the lesbian sex? It's supposed to be 13. FAIL
@Mariahselvidge - Yes, what you said. :)

Tyciol - My understanding, although I might be wrong, is that Eve Ensler rewrote the piece in order to lessen some of the controversy. Although in my opinion, the wrongness of what the woman did (not the character of the girl) is not lessened by a difference of three years. Again, that the character got some good out of it does not make what the woman did remotely right.

As was said a bazillion times before--this is one person's story about her experience. It does not say or mean that what HAPPENED to her was a good thing. She extracted something good from it, but that's not the same thing. The woman molested her as well as the man. The point is more about the resilience of the girl in question. The morals of the man and the woman involved are disgusting. I find it interesting that people are so quick to condemn this piece without really LISTENING to it.

And, although I am getting tired of posting this, please consider when watching this piece that it is a story about one woman's experiences. One woman's. It is not a piece saying that her experiences were good or bad. It is not a piece condoning what the woman in the story did TO her. It is simply relating her experiences as she told them. It is an uncomfortable piece, designed to make you think, and should not necessarily be accepted at "face value."

Actually, contributions we get at our performances of Vagina Monologues go directly toward our services for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness... including helping people at our shelters GET JOBS. :) And judging by our sold out performances... some American people do want this. Have a nice day.
