I think they might actually automate passenger first because freight trains are heavier. It would be hard to create a computer program that can "feel" like the engineer does. He can feel all the pushes and pulls and bumps and sways. And anyway there are already automated passenger trains though they are usually elevated

Maybe freight will eventually automate but commuter/passenger will probably always have humans running things. I just cannot see the people in a crowded metro area trusting the automation, and that would be the riders or anyone along the tracks.

That might not be a great job to have. Many companies want to automate their trains. This obviously means they wont need engineers

Don't wait. Start learning all you can now. Jobs are going to be really scarce for a while and that job would be a good one to have (and really cool too).

I agree on you with that one Metra has really cool trains that's the reason why I might work for them to drive trains.
