@BTsmoke so in actual fact you are saying people paid less even though officially it was more.... it's called a subsidy. not only howard did these deals. when you look at it in real terms housing was considerably cheaper. my 1st was $45k capped @ 13% the 2nd was $56k @ 17% all thanks to paul keating. but i also understand that investors and pensioners could make a fair living of invested funds. not so now. lets face it, all have tried to predict the future and all have failed to a degree.

@1AussieAvenger1 Howard as treasurer under Malcolm Fraser had higher interest rates by %0.2 but it was never passed onto the consumers because Howard did a deal with the banks effectively paying a portion of every mortgage!

keating = the sharpest tongue and wit ever to grace australian politics. his actions and historic moments will be remembered over time.
yep, the man who dogged his leader, causing the demise of a popular PM. the man who led Australia to the highest reseve bank, and home loan, interest rates in history. the man who's name now is sort of like a slurr.
however he was pro-active and had guts unlike some today on both sides of politics. he was respected and feared by his opponents.
