This is part 4 of my "Science of Anime" panel delivered at Naka Kon 2009. This portion includes discussion of how many galaxies it would take to build a mecha on the galaxy scale ones from Gurren Lagann.

Since the room was darkened and the screen came out overexposed and I came out underexposed, we've just used the audio to dub the slide images.

If you enjoyed this panel, feel free to come to Naka Kon 2010 where I will be hosting a new version of this panel with newer, more exciting questions. Or stop by my blog (http://www.angryastronomer.blogspot.com) for posts on the newest happenings in astronomy!

Clips in this part come from Gurren Lagann and are used under Fair Use for non-profit, educational purposes. The rest of the material herein is my intellectual property. If you would like to see material from this panel at your convention, please contact me.

  • Yeah. There was a lot wrong with that scene but I'd already done 2 Gurren Lagann segments and I didn't want to do anymore.

  • That panel was really interesting. I am a multidisciplinary student (I study philosophy, history to quantum physics and medicine) and surprisingly enough, I did not found any mistake. Your oral speaking skills aren't that great, but the lecture was indeed very good. I hope you'll continue explaining science to the masses, maybe someday outside the US.

  • I noticed that in the video clip, there are spiral galaxies rotating at apparently high speeds while the mecha is posing. Using the rotational speed of out galaxy, and a reference galaxy that rotated 5 times, the mecha took 250 million years to "turn on". This is rather slow by galactic terms, such that our entire evolution from mice like animals took a shorter amount of time.
