Completely immature attitude toward a serious subject. I expect better than that from the president.

What a mature attitude about serious subject matter.
1. The economy is in the dumps & he should atleast consider any idea bc what the government's been doing hasn't worked.
2. Cannabis is a serious medicine for many ailing patients from sweet old ladies with breast cancer to a 2 year old with a brain tumor to a 10 year old with severe autism.
There's a reason why the question had so many votes, its not 5 guys in their basement voting again & again, America smokes.

Dear Obama,
75% of Americans have smoked pot. Millions of people smoke pot everyday. Its not just "Internet users" you fvcking prick!!

The meeting was pro forma. In truth, the town hall meeting was but a means of Obama asserting the federal govt. position on, and continued prosecution of, the war on drugs and the right of the individual to ingest. It is that simple.
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Obama is right. It is a travesty that marijuana is illegal, but the idea that it'll help the economy is laughable at best.

Actually if you read Dr. Mirons book Drug "War Crimes: The Consequences of Prohibition", you will learn about the research that this Harvard economics professor that shows 77 Billion dollars per year will be the yearly financial benefit of legalizing marijuana.
You can see an interview on this topic hear on YouTube.

I wrote a paper on this very topic some years ago. While, yes, it's generally agreed that the yearly savings + revenue from legalizing and taxing marijuana is somewhere in the range of tens of billions, that still doesn't address massive unemployment, trillion dollar budget deficits, weakening currency, massive trade deficit, etc. I understand that it's important that marijuana be legalized, but the idea that it's even in the picture when it comes to the economy is laughable.

The idea that there would be mass unemployment if prohibition was ended, is the same idea that if we end the war in Iraq, we will lose a lot of jobs...
The thing with ending prohibition, is that jobs will be created in the hemp, medical MJ, and recreational industries.
It is known that legalization doesn't make usage go up. It just makes crime, and black market activities go DOWN.
Prohibition didn't work in the 20's and 30's, and it doesn't work now.

I'm having a hard time believing you can read since nowhere in my reply did I imply that there would be unemployment if prohibition was ended

This statement is untrue (you wrote):
"that still doesn't address massive unemployment, trillion dollar budget deficits"
Legalizing marijuana and industrial hemp will give us a legal cash crop to export and to tax. It will take money out of the black market, and give it to tax payers.
Millions will find jobs in the LEGAL marijuana industry, and after all marijuana IS the USA's largest cash crop! We may as well tax it and regulate it!
