The reverse of taking them off. Just apply the pressure on the back and rotate it inwards.

I have way too many cracked minifig torsos...

I have honestly never had this problem I have always done the arms straight out and the only cracks that have ever shown up on my 'figs are at the bottom of the torso and the wrist area.

some of my minifigs have very loose arms is that because i took the arms off too much or i did it wrong?
