I have the same problem from time to time. WE SHOULDNT HAVE TO REBOOT! when are apple going to get off their asses and sort out the current problems before releasing new stuff!
If your iphone is jailbreak'd and you have installed SBSettings or MemTool you can kill the ipod process (MobileMusicPlayer) to solve (temporarily) the problem, no need to reboot.

I rebooted my 3GS. It seems to be working fine again.
