By request from "meltzerboy" / Italian Soprano Luisa Tetrazzini (1871-1940) / Aprile (Tosti) / Percy Pitt - piano (Recorded June 2, 1909)

APRILE ~ Paolo Tosti (18461916)

in Italian...

Non senti tu ne laria
il profumo che spande Primavera?
Non senti tu ne lanima
il suon de nova voce lusinghiera?
È lApril! È la stagion damore!
Deh! vieni, o mia gentil su pratin fiore!

Il piè trarrai fra mammole,
avrai sul petto rose e cilestrine,
e le farfalle candide
taleggeranno intorno al nero crine.
È lApril! È la stagion damore!
Deh! vieni, o mia gentil su pratin fiore!

in English...

Do you not smell in the air
the perfume that Spring breathes out?
Do you not hear in your soul
the sound of a new, enticing voice?
It's April! It's the season of love!
Come, lovely one, to the flowery meadow!

Your foot will tread among violets,
you will wear roses and bluebells,
and the white butterflies
will flutter around your black hair.
It's April! It's the season of love!
Please come, my lovely one, to the flowery meadow!

  • I'm floored by the beautiful simplicity of her singing. Too much "interpretation" these days and not enough pure voice.

  • Doug, exquisite performance! Thank you. Maya

  • @AulicExclusiva Don't feel too bad about not recalling Tet's Serenata. It is EXTREMELY rare in its original 78 form. It was given a Victor number but was never released in the US. It was not, to my knowledge, readily available on LP either, because the Great Recordings of the Century issue on Angel TALKED about it, but didn't include it. Aprile and Serenata are two of her most precious (and GREAT) records, both from a soprano noted mainly for showy coloratura and great high notes.

  • Like zephyrs floating nearby! Lovely. Grazie, Doug. George

  • What charm and beauty and an all time great recording.

    Thanks-John

  • A wonderful perfromance. I love this and Gigli's performance of the song.

  • Douglasio,

    BELLISSIMO!

I love this song! I love the delicate piano, I am with my LOVE in a Villa overlooking Lago Como and we are listening to the Glorious Luisa. It is Paradise! Grazie

  • A beautifully sung version of a lovely song. She was a great woman with a joy of life and singing. Thanks.

  • Poetry, voice and music united into a

    cornucopia of beauty and delight!

    Tetrazzini's high notes, however, are

not meek little traceries but are assertive

    and powerful! Her coloratura hovers

then floats down onto the note with

    stunning effect while her vivacious

    personality pervades the atmosphere!

Thank you, Doug, for working your

    archival magic yet again!!

  • DOUG ~

What a voice, what a marvelously intuitive & artistic sense of phrasing ~ and evidently she was a great pal of Caruso's as well.

"Tet" would have been a lot of fun at the dinner-table too, with plenty of good Italian wine on hand, when everybody could take turns singing as the evening rolled along!

    ~ ANDY
