Funny, this supposed to have happened in 1995, but since half or late 1980's all lighthouses along the US coastlines have been automatized, so no personal contact would've been possible, therefore i call urban myth on this one.
The last USS Montana was sunk during WW1. This joke has been going around since at least then. And yes the correct honorary between one Captain to another is sir.
@DarkstarNovembr i think he says "son" - the phonetics of the vowel "o" plus, he's a captain, he doesn't need to be saying sir to a civilian or coast guard dude that is way beneath him AND not obeying his orders.

@itsmonti1 but he wouldnt be saying 'sir' to someone who he obviously thinks less of, so he's deffinately saying 'son'
