This is a 2-part video of Canadian Aboriginal Artist Dave Zachary (The Man of Stone) carving a soapstone fish from start to finish using only hand tools.
Feel free to ask questions here or at davezachary.com
Also I have raw stone for sale for anyone who would like to try carving.

  • How did you get into carving? How expensive is it to start out?

  • @peachy6969 I got into carving through my dad Harlen Zachary who taught me to carve when I was very young. I made my first carvings in 1991 when I was about 7years old. I sold my first carving when I was 13. It is a great art to try and it is very inexpensive to start up. You can carve it very easily with any woodworking tools. The most expensive part is the stone itself it sells for approx $3 per pound plus shipping. ( 1 pound is about the size of a christmas orange)

    Thanks
