Johnny Russell "Distant Drums"

Legendry Opry star Johnny Russell sings his version of anotyher Opry legends classic song.I first heard this many years ago on an Music For Pleasure LP compilation of Jim Reeves sound-a-likes. It didn't say who the singers were and it was only recently that I came across it again on a collection of country greats; this track is from that cd and in its notes is atributed to Johnny Russell, and yes, whilst it's an excellent cover, if you listen to this and then to the Jim Reeves original you can tell the differance, Russell's voice is "gruffer" and lacks the velvet smoothness of Gentleman Jim. I hope this will clear up some of the queries over who's singing.

In some ways it does sound like Johnny Russell; in other ways, it doesn't...but if the poster says it is, I'll agree it is...it's just not the type of song Johnny usually sings.

In places it sounds like Jim R. But on the low notes , I can tell its not .Bottom line,they are both great.

I saw him sing this in Reading Pa back in '76. I think it floored everyone there because it sure didn't sound like big John but it was. he got a standing O. great rendition
