Spring puppy season is upon us in full force. Shakira, a Lab/Shar Pei mix, gave birth to her 11 puppies at the Dearborn Animal Shelter just three weeks ago. Not only is Shakira a brave and good mama, but she also is heartworm positive. This means a special-needs foster home while she goes through treatment. The puppies won't be available for adoption until they are 8 weeks old (mid-June 2011). In the meantime, they need your help! Spread the word that heartworm is highly preventable; have your dog checked today!
