As far as I am concerned this is the ONLY version of this song. Much as I like Bette Middler, I think she missed the mark by a long shot in her cover of this song. Gary Morris ROCKS!!!!

i agree, no one can sing it as good as Gary.

@annadams95340 Yeah, the Whittaker version was out either one or two years before Gary Morris sang it. Morris is still ONE of the first, though!

@Taliesyn42 I hadn't heard the demo. I have heard Roger Whittaker's but didn't realize he was ahead of Gary . Makes sense though - it's his type of song and he does it well although I still prefer Gary. Thanks for letting me know.

@annadams95340 Actually, Bob Montgomery first sang it (as a demo), and Roger Whittaker was the first one to sing it on an album.

Gary was the first and the best.

The voice of an angel. My favorite version -- ever -- of this masterpiece.

@bucsfan1967 It's all a matter of opinion - nobody is right, nobody is wrong. cheers!
There is no one that does this song as well as Gary. Has he retired? Haven't heard from him in many years...Rody0

No he hasn't retired. I see him on CMT a lot (especially a show called 'Larry's Diner). You'd still recognize him, though his hair has gone gray. He says he's returned to his roots with music and is focused on Gospel music. Check out his website for news, info, tours at garymorrisdotcom

God's hand has touched this man.
"Bach gave us God's Word.
Mozart gave us God's laughter.
Beethoven gave us God's fire."
"God gave us music so that we might pray without words."

@carvetop01 Mozart is to music what Monet was to painting. (Full of colour/laughter/vibrance). Bach? Still don’t connect with his music but totally understand yur point of view. Beethoven? Totally understand that one and that’s a great way of putting it:) The gift of song/voice is truly a gift and that’s why we all buy the music of voices we can only enjoy and not duplicate/emulate. And to ‘‘scott9052; when my grandmother died, song played in my head. Nice to know it means as much to you as me:)
