On July 7th, 1946 Howard Hughes crashed with his XF-11 airplane in the Beverly Hills neighborhood near the Los Angeles Country Club golf course.
Martin Scorsese recreated this horrible incident quite impressively in his 2004 biopic about the famous aviator Hughes with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.
The music which underscores this sequence is the "Toccata and Fugue in D-Minor, BWV 565" an organ piece by Johann Sebastian Bach in a transcribition by Leopold Stokowski. The piece itself is conducted by Eugene Ormandy and performed by The Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra,

  • @nedalnekbrad i agree with all your points. It's completely what i think so too. And we we are both dead right.

  • That plane just folded right up and took a run out powder!!!

  • @TheM1a2d3d4y5 The question also is what would fearthering it do?normally you would back off thrddles and see what side is faultering, feather it,slowly bring up good engine.

  • @thresher4 Yeah I agree, if I had been in his place I think I would have shut down the engine all together, he should have been able to make it back to Culliver City with just one.

  • @TheM1a2d3d4y5 Aparently if he would have backed off the throddle on that side to a lower rpm it would have made the reverse pitch lessened to keep it flying, less drag.Hughes wasn't an experienced test pilot.

  • @thresher4 Oh yeah, reverse pitch! That's what I meant. :) Thanks! I understand now. I guess if I had been in a crash like that I would might have sued someone too!

  • @TheM1a2d3d4y5 Fine pitch is used to get max rpm. This prop design had problems with oil leaking from the hub causing the rear prop to go into reverse pitch, there was supossed to be a stop that prevented this from happening but don't remember details if it wasn't on or not.

Hughes sued Curtis Electric and it was settled out of court.

  • @thresher4 I thought that the prop went into fine pitch?

  • curtis electric props leaked oil,do to design,he flew longer than he should have,it was known that the props leaked. After this the last prototype has conventional props.

  • @CharlieDaChoralier Toccata and Fugue by Bach.
