My idea for the show that Clone Wars should have been.
I think I'm right in assuming that the most beloved time period of the Star Wars story is the original saga of the rebellion and the empire. No more tax disputes and annoying kids and aliens, just ragtag resistance fighters, Jedi warriors in hiding, and a tyrannical empire who holds the universe in an iron grip. This is the time period where the best characters, the best games, and the best films came from. So why then when a Star Wars television series finally comes out it about the least interesting time period and follows the least interesting characters? Is there anybody out there who doesn't think Kyle Katarn from the game series Dark Forces or Starkiller from The Force Unleashed couldn't kick teen Anakin's whiny ass, medichlorians be damned? More was at stake in the imperial time period. Things were darker, dirtier, more intense.

My idea for the ideal Star Wars show: Following the end of the republic, the jedi flee the encroaching influence of the empire. One manages to survive in hiding, even raising a son on a backwater planet. The son rejects his father's antiquated ideals of truth and justice, growing up in a more cynical time, but is forced to take up the mantle when his father is murdered by sith enforcers. Now cast adrift in a galaxy unfriendly to his ilk, bearing a light saber he barely understands, seeking out masters to train him who may no longer exist, and all the while questioning whether becoming a jedi is the right thing to do at all, he will hunt down his father's killers, perhaps encounter the burgeoning rebel alliance, be offered great power by the empire itself, and generally try to survive in a darkening galaxy far far away. With the story centric on a more troubled character with his own aspirations and moral beliefs I think the show would be much more interesting, instead of the Clone Wars approach to making broad impersonal stories about massive battles. The characters could be more mature in the original saga, better written because the show would appeal both to kids interested in the action and adults who would get a more in-depth and engrossing tale, not only of exterior conflict, but of the fallen jedi knight's own internal struggles.
I think the Star Wars universe, if it is to subsist, needs to return to it's roots, and not be afraid to tell a story again.
