He pulls the racket slightly back along with the approaching shuttle, just before the racket is meant to hit it, then changes the direction of the racket head and sends the shuttle in a compl. new direction of what it orig. looked like with his body and racket posture.
Try it, your badminton mates will "hate" you for it ;-) And there are lots of variations on this theme to practice ...
We call them "withheld shots" - I am not sure what the correct term is in E.
