Non returning boomerang made from the base of the trunk of a yew (I found the little tree already cut down by forest workers).

I tried to make this kylie fly over a "long" distance (~ 76m) by using only rather primitive ways, but I couldn't do it entirely (sticky tape, varnish, ...).

[[I followed - or adapted - advice given by user "pucikam"]].

Measuring a flight distance is not so easy, fortunately G**gleEarth can do it !

  • it is quite possible that the air resistance is important, but then the kylie must be big enough to keep the rotation. what are the measures and the weight-- I couldn´t see it on the video?

  • @pucikam

    global length : 64 cm ; weight = ~415 gr

    I just tried with some lead (various weights, various distance from the end of the leading wing) : results may have been better, sometimes, but it is was not very clear. I also got some flat trajectories and some strange kind of flight (the speed seemed to vary during the flight !!).

  • thank you !

    I have still to find some lead ... Meanwhile, I also tried :

    - with some metallic nuts that I had at hand : less air resistance, but results were a bit worse than with the stone ;

    - with only air resistance (tape only or tape+string) : a bit worse, not that much, depending on the wrapping and its position;

    Can it be that in some cases the air resistance is more important than the added weight ?

  • Hint : Lead tape. Could have been 100 meters.

  • @edbapemo

    thanks,

    I have to try that, and also find a bigger and safer place : some people may unexpectedly appear within the range of the kylie during the 5 or 6 seconds that will last the flight ;

  • I really like your projects: there is sth very scientific, yet practical to them. And they show the enormous amount of knowledge or trial & error that had to go into the so called primitive techniques.

  • I am following your experiments with keen interest.

  • congratulation! did you load only with the piece of stone or did you try a flat piece of plumb- air resistance ?
