RAIN FOREST DESTRUCTION 1916

This amazing look at massive rain forest destruction to build a rubber tree plantation in Sumatra circa 1916. By the time you see a rubber tire on a tractor back in Ohio, you begin to understand there is an ecological cost for something as simple as better tire for farmers. Since the the time of this video, techinques to create rubber by synthetic means have been discovered. There is no longer a need massive rubber plantations, but this rain forest would need more than 500 years to grow back to its former self. Not going to happen since the plantation has been converted to Palm oil which is used for cooking.

What's ironic is all that forest was destroyed for just a few years of rubber. Synthetic rubber took over just after WWII. Goodyear later sold the plantation.

Makes my heart ache to see those gigantic trees, some of which must have been a couple of thousand years old, cut down and burned so that some fat cats in the USA could make a buck off the back of hardworking but no doubt very underpaid workers in some far-away country. Such is the legacy of the "progress" we have enjoyed here in the "first world" in the past few lifetimes!!
