"Songs Uncle Dave Macon taught me to love"

Bile Em Cabbage Down is a minstrel song from the 1850's. The verses float from song to song and can be found in Shady Grove, Whoa Mule, and Lynchburg Town, among others. The "hoe cakes" described in the song were a favorite in the South before the American Civil War. Slaves apparently cooked hoe cakes on their hoes over an open fire. Confederate soldiers reportedly roasted them on bayonets.

  • I wish I could find tabs for Uncle Dave song's - I play guitar pretty good on what I know, but never studied music - so I always need tabs or at least chord names to look them up. if anyone has a pointer to Uncle Dave's (and frankly I have a lot of American folk I'd like to learn but the older it is the harder it is to find tabs - so old American folk tabs) - please mail me dani@3dsite.com - good work!

  • First heard this from frank Hamilton

  • I love your rendition of this song! And I didn't know the words before. This is the first tune I'm learning on the banjo.

  • Great tune, Lew. I like your version a lot.

  • I found another version on YouTube that attributes the tune to Mozart who visited Lizard Lick, KY prior to his death. Sounds like a cool story. Great tune, Lew!!
