1958 film Shortly after the end of the American Civil War, munitions producer Victor Barbicane (Joseph Cotten) announces that he has invented a new explosive, "Power X", which he claims is much more powerful than any previously devised. Metallurgist Stuyvesant Nicholl (George Sanders) scoffs at Barbicane's claims and offers a wager of $100,000 that it cannot destroy his invention, the hardest metal in existence. Barbicane stages a demonstration using a puny cannon and demolishes Nicholl's material (and a portion of the countryside).

  • @superstarjonesbros Yes, Space Mountain: "De La Terre a La Lune" in Disneyland Paris was based off of Jules Verne's original novel, "From the Earth to the Moon". The current "Mission 2" version of the ride has kind of separated from the previous theme a bit. The concept was brilliant of them to use though, in my opinion.

  • Unfortunately RKO was going under at the time whichmeant production had very little money for the affect. I myself, a Verne fan, would love to see something properly done with technology of today (even if the science behind it is a bit flawed, its still great fun to read.) Be a great steampunk film to try.

  • so this is what space mountain is based on? okay...

  • In this movie the only thing faithful to the original novel it's only the name of Jules Verne. what a missed chance with great actors like Cotten and Sanders!

  • just started reading the novel

  • Merchants of death.

  • I saw this late 50's as a kid, they never show it on TV, thanks for the post I'll watch it later and see how it compares to 50+ years of memory. I remember being enchanted with it as a 7 year old.
