Appalachian Voices, a small non-profit organization in North Carolina, is using Google Earth and Google Maps to help people grasp the scale of destruction from mountaintop removal for coal mining. You can fly over the mines in Google Earth or use Google Maps API to learn how you are using power from mines in Appalachia.

  • The coal company came with the world's largest shovel.

They tortured the timber and they stripped all the land.

They dug for the coal till the land was forsaken.

They wrote it all down as the progress of man. -- Paradise by John Prine

  • These b--tards are about to destroy our mountains in bishop va to squire wv please help stop them!

  • That stone she is wearing around her neck was probably dug out of a mountain somewhere.

  • Wow I am going hopefully be selected to attend a camp @ Appalachian to give back to the youth their.

  • MTR is faster, easier and cheaper from the Mining companies perspective. It is all about the bottom line, the almighty dollar. I understand that. While I do care what the mountains look like, my gravest concern is what effect MTR has on the people who live near the mines? Mountain tops can be reclaimed to a certain extent, but human lives and their health can not.

  • Selfish? Trying to save something for future rather than destroying it forever, for cheap, dirty energy? How did you do that, turn the meaning of a word completely so that it means the opposite of what it means in reality?

This is great. I ran across this by accident. I'll work to spread the word. I love mountains too.

  • How much of that coal is going to power google data centres?
