Here is a sneak preview, of sorts, of the drum part that will form the next iGenesis video.

Taken from their wonderful Three Sides Live album, this is a beautiful track by Genesis, with an awful lot of drumming going on :-) Those of you that watched me do this on my acoustic kit on YouTube a couple of years ago may recall that I said this was one of the hardest Genesis covers I have done. That is still true. It is incredibly deceptive, and Chester plays a sublime drum part.

It is easy to think that it is only the hectic instrumentals that are where the problems are, but this would be wrong. Even the verses have little things going on that make copying Chester a nightmare (for me at least!). His fill and accent choices are perfect, subtle and beautiful.

Obviously the instrumental sections are indeed hectic, and of course both Phil and Chester are playing these. I am but one drummer, so I cannot play everything (however, you are in for a little surprise on the iGenesis video).

I find that Chester's fills are really hard to emulate and memorise, and yet you have to get them pretty much spot on for the damn song to work! Doh!

The bit I am proudest of is the rimshot fill in the little bridge in the third verse. Took me AN AGE to learn how to play it right - something I had not done (or noticed) a few years back. I also play a double bass drum part this time at the end, instead of using only single hits. I think this is more accurate - it certainly sounds better.

Not sure what else to say. It is nice to be back in my old drum room - windy day, eh? And it was like 28 degrees C in there - not a lot of fun :-)

  • Is that the stock rack your using?

  • @SilverChevy2008 It is indeed.

  • wauw you are amazing!

I was wondering, it would be great if you can cover The Knife!

  • @gamesfrome Thank you, you are very kind!

The Knife is not one I have ever tackled - I find that early stuff frighteningly complex and busy and fast: Phil was in his prime as a drummer and showing off all the time! I am not sure if I can play any of that stuff :-)

  • Whaooo bellissimo, bravo bravo bravo.

    Merry Christmas.

  • @Staruan I thank you!

    Merry Christmas to you too!

  • amazing piece by Genesis, great work!

  • @jouxplan hahaha, Ye i know Phil was one of the best in his time xD I was just wondering :P Ive been watching your cover for like 6 times now, thinking wauw I wish I could do that :\ I guess I will have to practise some more haha :P

  • @GabrielFox91 Ha! Ha! Ha! That is one hell of a compliment, as it happens - thank you! No, I have not isolated one of the tracks. I have just recorded my drums 'on top' of the original Three Sides Live track. Three reasons it sounds 'good' - (1) I spent a lot of time creating a similar drum kit as Chester on my Roland; (2) I spent a lot of time creating a balanced mix between my drums and original and (3) I spent a hell of a lot of time trying to learn to play it note for note. I must be close!

  • Hi, did you isolate one of the tracks from the 5.1 miz to play along? It sounds as if there's no drum at all under your (wonderful IMHO) drumming :)
