Not always true. I always hope and try not to believe in them remedies when I got the flu. Unfortunately they work when I don't want them to :(

I've read a few accounts of the situation you're talking about in your comment, and sadly, most anthropologists seem to just play off whatever success such treatment has as the placebo effect in action. Ethnocentrism seems to prevail, especially when results cannot be quantified in a data set of some sort.
