Using a fantastic foam aircraft carrier built by FLAPS member John Tharp, vapor pilots re-enact the Doolittle Raid at the regular Monday night fly held in the Cady-Stanton Gym in Seneca Falls, NY.
@TN2708 Cos the Dolittle Raiders were stripped out B25 Mitchell bombers of the Army Air force , not Naval planes or crews .
The carrier steamed at full speed into a stiff breeze , giving 50 MPH of wind down the deck and the planes took off at full revs into this , with a lot of flaps down , at a high angle of attack , in a technique called " Stalling it off the deck" .
Bloody dangerous , especially for the first one off , who had only the front end of the deck to speed up on .
