Im assuming that you should teach him quiet first before u teach him how to speak so he doesnt keep barking when u tell him to bark... right?

Another way to keep your dog from barking is say whatever word it is you want, I use quiet, then give them a treat right after you say the word, do this a bunch of times, then when your dog starts barking say the word, they will stop barking and look at you knowing a treat is coming, make sure you praise him/her a lot when they listen. I did this with my dog and it works almost everytime.
