@teknobailey I also don't think ownership itself, should ever be what's illegal, but illegal acts that remain illegal.
Reason is, if a person who was past involved in crimes but is since straight, after conviction, needs to defend his/her life? They should be afforded that.
Also, once a person is out of prison, it is very hard to keep them from arming themselves and to do so, would require gross violations of all other rights...

@teknobailey Sorry, migraine and a 4 year old jumping in my arms cut my answer short, earlier.
1968 gun control law allotted power to the Attorney General to restore fire-arm rights. Attorney General has since delegated this power to the BATFE.
Congress, however, has blocked funds to allow for the BATFE to run investigations..
However, it's still law. There's also avenues through some states, for state offenses and the option of presidential pardons and such for federal offenses...
