Look at Africa - what progress have they made since the end of colonialism ? If the military/space developments were not there, India would have disintegrated into tiny states. ULFA/Maoists/Naxalites could have easily destroyed the democracy with Chinese backing. India has made great progress and still continuing. Poverty isnt something that can be eliminated in a short time. China is #2 in world poverty (150M), but nobody seems to notice it !
