Cable Tool Drilling; Cyclone 42

This is a Sanderson Cyclone Model 42 drilling a 5" well near Dellroy, Ohio. My Dad is at the controls-he's 72 years old. This was filmed on September 29, 2010. This rig was built in the 1950's, and this model was very popular around this area up through the seventies and early eighties. The 42 features a pneumatic shock absorber in the beam, and a fixed crown pully. I also wanted to show the crank operated wire line feed. These features were present on the models 40, 41, 42, 44, and 46. The crank feed was an option on the early model 36's, as well as the 38's, but not as commonly seen on those models. This rig was purchased by my Dad and Grandad in the late '60's, and the hydraulic jacks were added, at the Cyclone factory, sometime in the early '70's. This rig is one of the heaviest built examples I've seen. The rig is powered by a Ford 153 cid gas 4 cyl engine, and is mounted on a '69 GMC 5500 with 23,000 original miles. Dad was about 50' deep in soft shale when this was filmed. Thanks for watching!

Do you ever use tools from the Rampp Company in Marietta. Ohio?

@Malibumann69 The stem and rope socket on this rig are from Rampp, and I know the bailer dart valve is, too. All of our other rigs but one, have sockets and stems from Rampp, and we buy two sets of jars about every ten or fifteen years for our cleanout rigs. We usually have our tool joints machined in Zanesville because it's a shorter drive.

I know where there is a Large Cyclone Rig in NE Ohio scrap yard hope someone can save it from the torch man. long live the cable tool.

did anyone tell you about hard hats? Ran a 42 for a while. Went back to Bucyrus Erie 22W s. Used some Ramp, but mostly Spang jars. Some Acme stuff.
