This is the way the initial forge weld goes in my shop, using the hydraulic forging press. The billet consists of about 20 layers of 1084 and 15N20. Coming right out of the forge and into the press, the stack was only held together by the MIG weld running around it. After being pressed, the layers are actually forge welded together... so that we have a stack of 20 layers that are bonded as one.
