Paul K. Anderson, CRNA, MSN answers your questions about becoming a CRNA. He recently published a FREE SPECIAL REPORT "The Laser Focused CRNA School Application" which is available for no charge at his website http://www.RNtoCRNA.com.

Welcome to the next video, Become a Nurse Anesthetist: How long does it take to become a CRNA?

The current CRNA training programs are from 24 to 36 months in length. Once you begin your anesthesia training program, the schedule will be set for you. The programs are full time, and except for short breaks, it will be continuous through the duration of the program. This time will include academic classes as well as clinical rotations.

The length of the nurse anesthesia training program you attend is but one step in determining how long it will be before you are a CRNA. First, you will need to add the time from application submission until the program start date. Most schools require submission of the completed application package as much as one year before the class starts. The complete application requires several other time consuming prerequisites. For those of you that are licensed as RN's and have completed a bachelor's degree either, in nursing or another accepted field, you have met two of the major time consuming requirements. But, if it has been several years since completing your undergraduate degree, or your GPA is not high enough to be competitive, you may benefit in taking further classes to improve your chance of being selected to attend a CRNA training program.

A third time consuming requirement is completion of at least one year working as an RN in an acute care setting. Some of the CRNA training programs strictly define this as having experience working full time as an RN in an intensive care unit. While one year is often listed as the minimum requirements, many of the applicant have significantly more experience.

Other variables can include such things as: Completion of any necessary test, such as the Graduate Records Exam or the Miller Analogies Test, gathering information and contacting desired professionals for references. These application requirements vary with each of the schools, and as mentioned earlier, may need to be submitted to the school as much as one year before the scheduled start date.

As you can see, the time frame is variable and dependent on your personal situation and the school you have decided to apply to.

Paul

  • I have heard something about having a Phd on anesthesia??

  • @Gabriel7211989 The requirements for the entry level education required to take the certification exam to become a CRNA is changing. This will include a Practice-oriented doctoral degree (Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice, DNAP, or Doctor of Nursing Practice, DNP) or a Research-oriented doctoral degree (Doctor of Philosophy, PhD, or Doctor of Nursing Science, DNSc). These programs are a minimum of 36 months, beginning no later than Jan. 1, 2022. Most schools will start the new degree sooner.

  • Plz answer this through message... Is it frowned upon to get a online BA degree. Could it get keep me from getting a job? Or from getting into the next educational stage?

  • @MrBrezoilor first, make sure the online program meets the state Board of Nursing requirements for licensure in the state that you will work as an RN. Once you have passed the NCLEX-RN and receive your RN license you can be employed as an RN. It will be up to your employer if your education fits into their system. Next, if you plan on going on to an advanced practice nursing degree, ensure that the program is accredited and acceptable for the school that you plan to attend.

  • Hello, to become an CRNA do you need some course work in Chemistry, and is the math similar to pharmacy formulas. I'm thinking about perusing it but cautious about making the right decision

  • @lahana2244 you will need to have a chemistry, biochemistry/organic chemistry, and pharmacology in your bachelors's degree or nursing program. The pharmacy classes in the CRNA program will be in much more detail and in depth than the undergraduate. The math involved is usually no more complicated than what you would have learned in your high school algebra classes.
