Fourth in the "Autoharp Avenue" podcast series, champion autoharpist Jo Ann Smith is joined by fellow autoharp champion George Haig from Dunfermline, Scotland. George demonstrates an alternative tuning used on his diatonic autoharp to emulate the sound of Scottish bagpipes, and plays a medley of Scots tunes. A pdf file that explains the alternate tuning that George uses may be found at: http://files.me.com/autoharpist/hm4kkb . • The autoharp George is using in this video was made by Pete Daigle of Seatac, WA. This comment section won't let me post a link, but if you Google "Daigle" and "Autoharp", you'll find his webpage.

  • coool, thanks Jo Ann and Greg, that was splendid!!!!

by the by, what web cam do you use?, it's captures the sound beautifully.

  • I'm using the built-in web cam on my Mac, but use a Blue Snowball USB condenser mic to pick up the sound. I think it does a respectable job for this type of recording.

  • Who made this autoharp?

  • OMG, just surfing youtube and I come across George, hello George.

  • This is so wonderful! I have been wanting to play Scottish and Irish ballads on it, but I just can't seem to find any videos on it, until now.

Unfortunately, the link to the alternate tuning is not working. Do you know of another place I could find it?

    Thank you Jo Ann! :)

  • Thanks Jo for introducing us all to Mr Haig. The two of you are surely the best of all of the autoharp players on the Tube. Great!

  • i LOVE IT I LOVE IT. I am Scottish too so i really well... loved it.

  • When I first heard George playing at the Dunfermline folk festival last year, I was amazed by his playing; it was the first time I had heard this instrument, and the music was so beautiful and different from anything I'd heard before. Keep playing scottish tunes the amazing instrument!

I also hope you'll visit Trondheim sometime!

  • That is incredible! I love the bagpipe-like sound George was able to produce with the autoharp, and his playing is nothing but superb. I sat here watching this with my jaw hanging open, I was just so amazed at the beauty of the music.

  • Wow I've never heard something like that before! Thanks for sharing with everyone :)
