India's Tata Group unveiled on Thursday a US$2,500 car billed as the world's cheapest amid predictions the no-frills compact could revolutionise how the nation of 1.1 billion people travels. The sparsely appointed Nano targets increasingly affluent Indians trading upfrom a motorcycle to a car amid an economic boom. The launch of the Tata Nano was a landmark in the history of transportation, like the first powered flight by the Wright brothers or the first lunar landing, said 70-year-old tycoon Ratan Tata, head of the giant conglomerate. Tata, likened by India's media to US automobile pioneer Henry Ford, also dismissed fears the Nano - so-called to appear both high-tech and small - would herald more congestion and pollution. He said he wanted to make 'a safe, affordable and all-weather transport -- a people's car, designed to meet all safety standards and emissions laws and accessible to all'. The four-door, five-seater car is due to hit the roads later this year costing just 100,000 rupees (US2,500), excluding tax, after Tata Group cut costs back to the bone. • the wheel is really very small

  • I think 6 feet tall dude can fit in there. I am not fat. :) Or Indians are so tiny?

  • You wouldn't be able to fit in it anyways.

  • right on! big vehicle big ego!

  • of course there will be a spike of pollution, but eventually, people will switch car and not use smog spewing motorcycles and older automobiles. Then things will get better over time. It is a good idea, but you have to make some sacrifices.

  • This car's not coming to US. It's too cheap and unsafe.

  • cute vid

  • how does increase the amount of people on the road???? have you ever looked into the windows of the cars/trucks on american roads?

who's driving them? 1 soccer mom on her way to work or the store!!! Driving a big gas sucking dodge ram p/u or a ford explorer or some damn gas pig all in the name of image!!!

vanity @ its best! Big vehicle= big ego!

  • On Indian roads this car is SAFE coz in the event of accident there is 90% probability that it will bang with another small car of its size & weight. Besides in city traffic all cars move at low speed. So momentum of all cars is small & hence they are safe. If you wanna make SAFE, AFFORDABLE & FUEL EFFICIENT cars make them small and slow and NOT convert them into TANKS like in US.

  • With so many people interested in the new Tata Nano (Rs 1-lakh) car, If you're asking how to find a dealer or how to import it in your country here is the answer:

Seek a Tata Motors dealership to sell your Nano. I assume the dealer is going to be in India (about 170 dealers countrywide) and you'll have to pay for the whole shipment.
