"What does dance look like in Asia today? This piece explores how "foreign" dance styles have been embraced and refigured in Asia ( and Asia America ) to give them some local flavor. From a modern piece accompanied by traditional music that reflects the incorporation of old and new in dance groups like Shenwei Dance Arts, to a segment inspired by the popularity of social dance in Asia particularly Ronda Minala and Taiwan Tango, and concluding with a "dance-off" based on the styles of dance crews like the Jabbawockeez and Kaba Modern, we aim to redefine the boundaries of what many people consider Asian dance styles. As a lottery piece, we hope to bring diversity to the show not only through the styles exhibited but also by creating a space for those who do not belong to a formal performing group to have an opportunity to enjoy LNY from the other side of the curtain."
