Fire at Morrisons Petrol Garage

A supermarket petrol station in West Lothian has been evacuated following a blaze in its forecourt.

Firefighters were called to the petrol station at Morrisons in Livingston at 1550 BST as petrol on the ground caught fire from a car which was well alight.

At least 28 firefighters were called to the scene as the fire had spread to the petrol pumps.

The fire at the station on Alderstone Road, which has been closed, has caused diversions at the Adam Brae Roundabout.

A Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "The urgency and concern was due to the fire spreading to the petrol pumps.

"We received 12 calls about this fire and because we were on the scene within five minutes we were able to put out the fire out before it set the pumps alight."

The petrol pumps were still being hosed down at 1700 BST in a bid to cool them down.

@natabang It's written in the comments somewhere but who knows for sure? We were just in the right place at the right time to get it on vid. Didn't think at the time that we were actually calmly strolling past something that could've wiped us out at any second. Stupid of us. they were using foam to fight the fire, sadly livi only have 1 fulltime pump now, madness!

They were using foam, we walked past the garage later that day and it was everywhere.

what caused the fire was some polish guys working for a maintenence company were pumping out a petrol tank to clean it and had run the suction hose through the van, they were using the wrong pump and some vapour escaped. One of the guys put on the interior light and the whole thing went up.

bizarrely the company won a health and safety award two weeks later.

I find it amusing how I'm doing my Petrol Station Competency Training at my own Morrisons store in South Wales, and my manager told me to search for videos from this store... Quite educational on what a petrol station fire looks like, actually...
