@tvpirate05 The cue tones can still be heard on Retro Television Network The announcement goes like this...
"RTV. The best (*beepbeepbeepbeep*) classic television"
-
Love the cue tones starting at 0:17...a relic from cable past!

@dgendvil DTMF tones. They indeed are the same tones used when you dial a phone. They were used on cable during the 1970s-80s to signal when the cable was going to cut to local feed or vice-versa.

Man I remember watching GORP on HBO back when I was in highschool. Laughed my ass off to that movie.

Back in the day where channels signed on and off...takes me back to being a kid...
-
hbo didn't work 24 hours until september 1981 on weekends
somewhere in 1982 every day.
-
@dgendvil That high-pitched beeping noise that sounds like someone dialing a phone number...
-
What are the cue tones?
I think the sign-on and the Gorp promo was from October 29, 1980 but looking at the program schedule, HBO led with Lawrence Of Arabia at 5:30 PM followed by Gorp. The schedule video before hand was previewing the next couple of days (Sunday November 2nd and Monday November 3rd). I think Rocky II was added later (it premiered on HBO the next month).

I was leaning towards October (I have the HBO guide for that and November) since the intro was cut into.
