Okay, I'm going to write some stuff. This is probably going to be another 5-6 part post, to comply with Youtube's stupid "post under 500 characters" b.s rule. I'll post backwards, so you can read it like a letter. Um... yeah. Dude. (Totally love the toddler stealing the spotlight, by the way.)
Now, I agree that after a while, "Boys Over Flowers." it starts turning very "reverse harem." It's a plot device a LOT of shoujo manka-ka use to create conflict in the heroine's life and make sure she doesn't reach "happily ever after" in book one. (For example, the main character's childhood friend will pop up out of nowhere and confess his feelings. A mysterious foreign exchange student will arrive and suddenly fall in love with the her. Etc.)
Because "Hana Yori Dango" is a shoujo manga, it's driven entirely by the characters. No fighting robots. No sword fights. It's a character drama, so these interfering people become useful to the plot. However, the pitfall of having such a looooooong series is that you have to keep introducing more characters to keep the pace going and it gets REALLY crowded. By book 12, there are long-legged bishounen walking around EVERYWHERE, and they all look the same!
But where Hana Yori Dango differs from other titles in its genre is that the main character is actually WORTH all the attention. Look at Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi- she's a total twit. Stupid. Gluttonous. Selfish. Her problems are superficial. ("Oh, no! So many gorgeous men in love with me! Whatever shall I do?") Tsukushi is a strong, intelligent character. She's got morals that she doesn't let anyone compromise.
