This is a video of the Rowland-RL or "Simplified" Loyal cycle engine. It's an open crankcase reversible 2-stroke cycle engine with compression prior to ignition that was built from the RMC type D castings. This engine differs from a conventional Loyal cycle engine in that it doesn't have valves. It differs from the RMC "Modified" Loyal cycle in that it uses a conventional piston & only has one power stroke per revolution. The engine can rev to over 5000 or idle nicely at 0 rpm. It runs off gasoline vapor from a RMC wick fed, valve-less (free-flow) Mason jar fuel tank. It can run on most any fuel.

RMC's "Simplified" Loyal cycle is unique in that it is one of the most simple compression engine cycles so far. The cycle in its most basic form can be made to run in a piston-crank engine with only 3 pieces to the entire engine; (frame/cylinder, crankshaft/flywheel & a piston). With compression ignition it will run without any spark plug, fuel injector, choke or needle valve, screws, nuts, bolts, connecting rod or rings on the piston, & with only one hole drilled into the cylinder.

Plans will be available for both engines. (Regular & 3-piece Simplified)

1/20/2012 While not practical but great for demonstrations; a 2-piece RMC "Simplified" engine has been made. Like the 3-piece Simplified, it has no nuts, bolts, pins or fasteners & consists of a one-piece piston/flywheel/partial crank & a one-piece cylinder/base/partial crank & with only one hole drilled into the cylinder (two if you drill an oil hole). Plans will be available.
