  • look up "universe of consciousness" on amazon, or "bright air brilliant fire" by gerald edelman. BABF describes all this stuff. i'm sure they're closest to understanding how it works.

oh but the photodiode isn't aware of any states: it doesn't satisfy the tononi/edelman criteria for awareness.

  • I'll be placing an order soon; I usually order 3 books at a time and I've got two lined up already. Which of these two you mention do you recommend?

  • Dude: Giulio Tononi. It's *not that hard*.

    joo-lee-oh toh-no-nee

  • Thank you for posting this short video and the link to the paper, it is in fact very interesting.

Just one quick note: did you notice that if you speak of something interesting, and you don't have big boobs (made up in Taiwan Silicon valley) or lips, you just get 200 views? That could be something to write a consciousness article on :-)

  • I really enjoyed Bright Air... to be honest Universe of Consciousness is still on my bookshelf so I can't really comment on it - but BABF is definitely a good statement of their theories - it goes into Edelman's ideas about neural Darwinism too, which is a hair's breadth from going over my head, but amazing nonetheless (where do artificially designed objects? Answer: Darwinian selection processes running in the brain). If you buy UoC, let me know what you think of it!

  • a way of determining how conscious something is... very interesting. this is the type of thing i would like to know more about.
