June 17, 2011 marked the 71st anniversary of Consul General of Portugal in Bordeaux Aristides de Sousa Mendes' Act of Conscience when 30,000 WWII refugees, including 10,000 Jews, were saved with his visa.
The Sousa Mendes Foundation in partnership with the Consulate of Portugal, the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America, and The Portuguese Tribune honored Sousa Mendes' act of defiance against his government's orders.
Speakers included visa recipient Daniel Mattis of Salt Lake City, co-founder of the International Committee to Commemorate Dr. Aristides de Sousa Mendes Anne Treseder and Robert Jacobvitz, award-winning journalist Reese Erlich, granddaughter and Sousa Mendes Foundation director Sheila Abranches, Deputy Consul General of Israel Gideon Lustig, and Consul General of Portugal António Costa Moura.
