Amtrak Capitol Limited train #29 heads west through Point of Rocks. A young boy at the station is treated to nine beeps of the horn as the train moves slowly past. I knew when the train was coming because the boy yelled "Hello Amtrak!" about 30 seconds before I could see it so I just started filming.

  • @GP30RDMT He made the boy very happy.

  • That was very likely Brian...Bruce don't blow the horn for anything but crossings!

I had trouble uploading last night - I'll try to post another clip now shot with my arms fully extended straight up. Talk about needing the cam's best stabilization...

  • I used a full-sized tripod all the time until I got this camcorder but now I've started filming without one for the most part. That has let me film from some places where I couldn't fit a tripod or would have had to shoot through a fence for only 10-15 seconds of capture. I may go back to using a tripod at some point but for now I'm having fun not being tied down. Things get kind of dicey at full zoom though. Here, the train is almost a full half-mile away at the very end per Google Maps.

  • I got lucky then, because a lot of what is good about this clip is the slow speed. I thought maybe it was because of the station and curve.

The camcorder stabilization is about as good as it gets in a consumer cam today - this was filmed with a Sony CX500V, their first model to have "3-Way Shake Canceling" last year.

  • That may be Brian at the helm. They had a speed restriction there at the junction from the previous day which was the reason for his slowness.

Very Nice. Perfect lighting. Cameras stabilization seems good. Maybe a cheap tripod wont hurt though.
