Food in Japan is cheap (if you like japanese food; foreign food can be very expensive). Hotels are quite expensive; traditional inns (ryokan) can be cheaper, rent and youth hotels are also an option. Traveling in Japan is not that expensive if you buy the Japan rail pass before going there.
