UNICEF: Promoting breastfeeding in Tajikistan

During World Breastfeeding Week, 1-7 August 2008, UNICEF and other advocacy groups are promoting exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life, which experts believe could save 1.3 million infant lives every year.

Tajikistan, 7 August 2008 - Over the last decade, Tajikistan Breastfeeding Week has been made possible through the support provided by UNICEF and the Ministry of Health (MoH) of Tajikistan and its partners. This year, in an effort to increase support from other channels, World Breastfeeding Week is promoting the global theme of, 'going for the gold by supporting mothers to breastfeed'.

"Support for breastfeeding is crucially important for mothers, babies and the community itself. This golden support, irrespective of conditions, ensures the best start for children's lives," said Ruth Leano, Deputy Representative of UNICEF in Tajikistan.

According to the National Breastfeeding Coordinator Rahmatulloev Sherali only 25 per cent of Tajik mothers are breastfeeding their babies exclusively for the first six months.

I exclusively breastfed my babies too, and they were so very healthy, and they are really smart individuals. Three of my four children never even had a bottle once.

why would they promote it in Tajikistan? In Tajikistan this is how it's always been, maybe few mothers wouldn't go for it,Compared to Western world in terms of breast-feeding, Tajikistan is much more ahead. It's just another bogus project to spend some money on, to show that these organizations are really doing the job. Why not to provide better jobs for fathers and mothers, so they could eat better and nutritious food and to be able to feed their kids with healthy food. UNICEF = corruption

huh, UNICEF promoting breastfeeding in Tajikistan? Am I really seeing this? there's nothing else but breastfeeding in Tajikistan. I'd say UNICEF is learning from Tajikistan how to breastfeed and promoting it in the western countries......... Why doesn't UNICEF spends its money for really necessary projects in Tajikistan instead?
