Watchmen Rorschach - Pagliacci

One of my favorite parts of the movie Watchmen.


Rorschach:
I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor.
Says he's depressed.
Says life is harsh and cruel.
Says he feels all alone in a threatening world.
Doctor says, "Treatment is simple.
The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight.
Go see him.
That should pick you up."
Man bursts into tears.
Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci."
Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.

The point is that Pagliacci the clown is not being taken seriously. He lives as a clown to entertain others. He mends hearts with his performance and makes everyone happy but is miserable inside. Even as he breaks down in front of everyone, he is laughed at. So the irony is that the man that gives joy to everyone lives a depressing life.

almost everyone that seen this movie that didnt have some knowledge of watchmen before viewing it, told me they were kinda lost. also most movie viewers thought this would be a superhero more action then story, so they probably were not noticing the great story. its one of those movies you need to see twice, for the non-fans.

This is just simply genius! The joke itself is already great, but I also think that they did a good job in telling the joke with the pictures just like in the comic. I love the comic and i like the movie, but actually I think the ending in the film is better that the ending in the comic.

@hound4680 I disagree. I did not read Watchmen and, in fact, had no knwledge of the series when I saw this movie, and I understood it perfectly. I think the problem lies in the average mindless, Hollywood slave seeing this movie, because as you said, they are expecting a "traditional" superhero movie, wherein the heroes where bright spandex, beat up some bad guys and save the world. It has nothing to do with being a Watchmen fan or not.

Was funnier when Rorschach told it in the graphic novel. Pacing across panels is easier to control.

currently reading the novel........shames the movie in every single way. Kinda weird considering i loved the movie, and the directors cut was really good. :D
