@bondage2012 have you seen the movie? have you got an idea of how painful is a seppuku?nearly no one in the past succeded in committing all seppuku's phases correctly...most of the times the samurai's head was cut before the second cut....in this movie he was a ronin, poor, desperate...they forced him to use a bamboo sword to commit harakiri, so that is!

@Zack0Amizuki of course, in fact it's what I said...there was a step-ritual theorically codified, but many samurais didn't observe it completely cause of the pain and the consequent dishonor to show your face suffering...so this movie shows a rare exception, but it's still awsome

@Sarva07 for good real seppuku you don't need to do all steps. just undress kimono and stab yourself to your belly, immediately after stab your friend can cut your head off and it's over

This is how a culture properly handles suicide.

You endure your fate, but if you dishonor yourself, you end yourself, and it is not cheap or easy.

A Commandant of one of the German death camps attempted to kill himself by eating his gun, to cheat the American soldiers who freed the camp.

He failed, but paralyzed himself. When an American entered his office, the Commandant begged for mercy with grunts and eye motions.

He was denied release, and it took him about half an hour to die.

That's the whole point of the movie. This clan is a disgrace with no concept of honor. Full of cowards and hypocrites, and that's what the main character proved.
