"Garden" is an interactive installation. A motif of this work is a Japanese old tale "Grandfather Cherry Blossom". This is a story of the kind old man and the greedier grouchy old man. In this story, the kind old man had a sad experience a lot by grouchy old man. For example, grouchy old man kill the kind old man's dog. And grouchy old man burned a keepsake from the dog. But one day, the kind old man makes a dead cherry tree come back to bloom with the ashes of a keepsake. His kindness bring a dead cherry tree into blossom. And he gets a happiness last. In this work, it turn into colorful flowers that small pieces of paper audience sprinkle on the garden. That is small pieces of paper means the ashes of the kind old man.
And another concept is "non virtual communication". This work creates an off-line communication between audience. For example, eye contact and cooperation between users for turning into colorful flowers in the garden, these physical communications are made by a computer program and an interface of this art work. In this work, audience must continue sprinkling small pieces of paper in the garden for young leaves bloom while about 3 minutes. This ordeal induce communications and a sense of achievement between users.
This art work is showing at Ars Electronica Center from Jan 2009.
