NYPD Officer Killed By Another NYPD Police Officer

New York City Police officer shot during an incident in East Harlem late Thursday night has died.

The shooting took place near the corner of 124h Street and Second Avenue, at approximately 10:30 p.m. The officer was was taken to Harlem Hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the officer, who had just gotten off work, was shot and killed by a fellow officer while chasing a suspect who had broken into his car.

The shooting happened within blocks of a Harlem police station.

said the 25-year-old officer, Omar Edwards, died about an hour later at Harlem hospital.

Edwards noticed a man rummaging through his car and starting chasing him with his gun drawn.

Plainclothes officers spotted the chase and intervened. one of those officers got out of his vehicle and fired six times, hitting Edwards in the arm and chest. Edwards did not fire his weapon. Part 01 Of 02

Omar Edwards was chasing a suspect with a firearm drawn when a marked unit appeared.

Although there are questions it is now known that Omar Edwards was not in uniform when he discovered a person breaking into his personal vehicle.

He gave chase.

Nothing else is known at this time.
