Thanks for putting this together. Mailer was a prophet and, proverbially, died unhonoured in his own country; but his books -the best of which are among the best in American literature- will continue to inform and enrich the American consciousness.

He's dead right about women's lib/feminism. It's humorless; it doesn't acknowledge the difficulties men face in life; and it tends to be too self-centered, too limiting.

pretty unabashed publicity hound in his early years. the dildo thing is a good example. most famous novelist and journalist in america wasn't good enough for mailer. truely a genius of public manipulation, and to his credit, it never strays from the common good, even when it is purely self affirming.
