Christopher Atkinson performs Prelude and Fugue No.24 in D minor by Dmitri Shostakovich. Written in a remarkably short span of just three months in 1951, Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues pay homage to Bach as well as incorporating influences from the Russian Orthodox Church, his contemporary Soviet composers, music for silent film and Jewish music. The final Prelude and Fugue is an immense conclusion t the cycle. The militaristic quality to the Prelude is quintessential Shostakovich, a style found in most of his Symphonic writing. The Fugue however possesses a more soulful and somber atmosphere before erupting into the second Fugal subject that brings the piece to a somewhat triumphant conclusion . Like most of Shostakovich's output there seems to be a hidden meaning behind the grandeur of the music. This has been, still is and forever will be ground for speculation.
